We love coming here to get authentic pork hash and other goodies every time we visit from mainland. There’s limited parking (street parking on meter or a close pay to park lot nearby). This place is legit with amazing flavors in Chinatown (near Waikiki).
The spouse brought home a bag of their almond cookies. I had high hopes for this Chinese version especially coming from a Chinese bakery. On the outside they looked great. But after the first bite, it was pretty disappointing. First off the density was very light and hollow, the total opposite of what I was expecting. Secondly and most importantl, the flavors weren’t there. No butteriness and almost no almond flavor. OVERALL: If I’m going to indulge in fat and cholesterol, I want it to be worth it!
There's usually a line so get there early. There are several parking lots around. Finding parking at the metered spot nearby are very hard to get. We ordered the hot dog bun, sugar honeycomb cake, steamed and baked bbq pork bun. Sugar honeycomb cake was really good, very thick. Even thicker than the ones in San Francisco Chinatown. Steamed bbq pork bun was Huge! The bun was very light, they gave tons of bbq pork inside. Haven't tried the baked pork bun yet, will revise my review once I try it. Definitely, a must go to spot if you a cheap breakfast or snack option.
Update: this bakery has some of the best char-siu puffs, naturally we came back a couple days later to load up. A wonderful small bakery with a huge taste. Original Review: This old time Hong Kong bakery is well known among the locals. We just tried a couple items today, the sesame buns and char-siu buns, both were better than others we had on Oahu. The staff was very friendly and busy! This place was hopping with a lot of customers waiting and a large number of workers rushing to get the orders ready. It reminded me of bakeries in the old days back in Asia. We will now stop by this bakery every time we are in Chinatown.
Taro steamed bun - 3.75 stars Generous with filling, not too sweet, but should be served hot/kept in a warmer as the bun was hard. Will need to steam it again when we're home. Green bean pork rice dumplings Taro snowskin mooncake
